>> VARIETY IS THE SPICEOF LIFE. I LOVE GOING TO FISHERIES THATARE MULTI-SPECIES FISHERIESAND TRAIL END CAMP LOCATEDIN THE WINNIPEG RIVER IS JUSTA TREMENDOUS DRIVE-TO FISHERY. YOU’VE GOT BLACKTOPTHE ENTIRE WAY, EASY TO GET TO. AND ONCE YOU GET ONTHIS RIVER SYSTEM,THERE’S ALL KINDSOF DIFFERENT OPTIONS. THERE’S WALLEYE FISHING,SMALLMOUTHS, PIKE, CRAPPIES. TRY A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING,YOU’D USE EVERY LUREIN YOUR TACKLE BOXAND CATCH FISH. THAT’S WHAT I LOVE ABOUTTHIS PART OF THE WORLD. >> WE’RE IN A BEAUTIFUL PLACEFOR THE DAY. WE’RE UP ON THE WINNIPEG RIVER. AND YOU KNOW WE FIRSTDISCOVERED THIS AREAA COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. WE CAME UP HERE AND DIDAN ICE FISHING EPISODE. WE WERE FISHING FOR CRAPPIESHERE IN THE WHITESHELL CHAIN,WHICH ISN’T TOO FAR AWAYFROM THIS AREA. AND I WAS JUST INTRIGUED BY IT. JUST A DIFFERENT LANDSCAPE. IT’S JUST A BEAUTIFUL AREA. AND THERE’S JUST SO MUCHWATER, JUST SO MANYDIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES. AND WHAT REALLY INTRIGUED MEBOTH THIS AREA IS JUSTTHE MULTI-SPECIESFISHING OPPORTUNITIES. >> ON SO MANY DIFFERENT LAKESAND RESERVOIRS THAT WE FISHYOU KNOW COME MIDSUMMERONCE THE WATER WARMS UP,YOU JUST CAN’T GO WRONGPULLING A BOTTOM BOUNCERAND SPINNER BELOW THE BOAT. I MEAN IT JUST CATCHESWALLEYES EVERYWHERE. AND IT’S JUST A SIMPLEPRESENTATION, SOMETHINGTHAT ANYBODY CAN DO. YOU JUST LET THAT BOTTOMBOUNCER DOWN UNTIL IT HITSTHE BOTTOM,YOU LET OUT A LITTLE BITMORE LINE, UNTIL THAT LINE’SAT ROUGHLY A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. AS LONG AS YOU FEEL THATBOTTOM BOUNCER TICKINGTHE BOTTOM ONCE IN A WHILE,YOU’RE DOING IT RIGHT. ENABLES YOU TO CATCHSCATTERED FISHAND ALSO ENABLES YOUTO FIND FISH ONCE THESE FISHSPREAD OUT COME MID SUMMER. GET THAT IN THE WATER HERE. YEAH, JUST A GORGEOUS FISH,JUST CLASSIC STRUCTURE FISHING. >> BOY, THAT FISH JUSTSMACKED IT. THAT’S WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS. WHOA. YOU JUST HOLD ON,THERE AIN’T A DOUBTIN YOUR MINDWHEN THESE FISH HIT. YOU KNOW WHAT,IT’S A WALLEYE. >> WHOA. >> A WALLEYE. >> BEAUTIFUL FISH. >> YEAH. >> THANK YOU SIR. NOW IT’S JUST FUN FISHINGTHE WAY THOSE BITES ARE. >> DO YOU WANT TO LET HIM GO?>> YEAH, I’LL JUST PULL HIMOUT OF THE NET HERE. >> IT’S A PRETTY ONE. >> YEAH. GORGEOUS. YOU KNOW WE’RE PULLING THESE,THERE IS ABOUT A MILE AN HOUR,YOU SEE IS NOT A VERY BIGSPINNER AT ALL BUTWHAT A FIVE FOOT,FOUR AND A HALF FOOT SNELL,WITH JUST A LITTLE FLICKER BLADEAND JUST USING A HALF CRAWLER. MAN, WHEN THESE FISH HITI MEAN YOU’RE JUST HOLDING ONTO THE ROD AND THEY JUST,THEY JUST RATTLE IT. JUST THREADING THEM ON. I LIKE TO GO UP PAST THE KNOT,SNELL KNOT. THEY’LL JUST TWIRLTHROUGH THE WATER. KIND OF LIKE WHAT PEOPLEARE DOING WITH SLOW DEATH. BUT WALLEYES CAN’T RESIST IT. >> FROM THE DOCK AT TRAIL END,ALL THE WAY TO THE ONTARIOBORDER IS ABOUT 40 MILES. AND IT’S REALLY DIVERSE. YOU GET BIG OPEN AREASWHERE IT’S MORE LIKE A LAKE. YOU GET PINCH POINTSIN THE RIVERWHERE IT NARROWS DOWN. AND THE NICE PART OF THATIS YOU GET DIFFERENCESIN TIMES OF THE YEARAS THE CREEK MOUTHSIN THE SPRING PRODUCE FISH,MIDDLE OF SUMMER ONCE ITGETS HOT, THE CURRENT AREASSTART PRODUCING. RIGHT NOW WE’RE STILLFISHING HUMPS,PULLING BOTTOM BOUNCERS. BUT INSTEAD OF HAVING JUSTONE NARROW LONG RIVEROR ONE BIG HUGE LAKEYOU GET A LITTLE BIT OF BOTHAND IT SPREADS THE FISHING OUTTHE SEASONS. OH, I JUST MISSED ONERIGHT THERE. AND KEEPS IT VERY CONSISTENTTHROUGHOUT THE YEAR. WE CAN CATCH FISH MOSTLYTHROUGHOUT FROM MAYRIGHT TILL OCTOBER. AND THERE’S ONE!THAT’S A WALLEYE. IT’S A BIG WALLEYE. >> WHAT HAVE YOU GOT THERE?>> LOOK AT THAT,A BIG WALLEYE. >> OH YEAH, NICE WALLEYE. >> THERE WE GO. HE’S GOT A LAMPREY EEL ONHIS BACK FIN. >> OH COOL. LOOK AT THAT. THERE, NICE, BEAUTIFUL FISH. THERE YOU GO. NICE. WORKED A FEW OTHER FISHIN THERE TOO,LET’S SPIN AROUND ON ‘EM HERE. >> THERE SHE GOES. >> STILL HAS A LOT OF SPUNKIN HER. >> YEAH. >> THAT WAS COOL. >> COME MIDSUMMER INTO LATESUMMER YOU KNOW THE FISH CANGET SCATTERED. AND A LOT OF TIMES PEOPLETHINK THAT FISHING GETSTOUGHER AS THE SUMMERPROGRESSES. BUT EACH YEARDURING THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMERWHEN IT GETS HOT OUT,WE CAN FIND SOME OFOUR BEST FISHING. AND I HAD TO USE ONEPRESENTATION FOR THE RESTOF MY LIFE MIDSUMMER,A LOT OF TIMES IT WOULD BEA BOTTOM BOUNCER AND A SPINNERJUST BECAUSE IT’S SO SIMPLEAND SO EFFECTIVELY. THEY JUST FLAT OUT CATCH FISH. WELL, JUST A COUPLE OFGENERAL RULES OF THUMB. TYPICALLY USE ONE OUNCEOF WEIGHT FOR EVERY 10 FEETOF WATER. SO IF YOU’RE IN 10 FEETOF WATER, YOU CAN USE AN OUNCE. IF YOU’RE 20 FEET OF WATERUSE 2 OUNCE BOTTOM BOUNCER. BUT JUST GO UP DEPENDINGON THE DEPTH OF WATERTHAT YOU ARE IN. AND TYPICALLY YOU’RE JUSTRUNNING THEM AT A 45 DEGREEANGLE BEHIND THE BOAT. NOW IF YOU’RE JUST OUT THERETO CATCH FISH,THIS IS JUST SIMPLE AND EASYTO DO BECAUSE YOU JUST LETLINE OUT UNTIL YOU HIT BOTTOMAND YOU GO. AND TYPICALLY WE ARE TROLLINGANYWHERE FROM SAY A MILETO A MILE AND HALF AN HOURIF WE’RE USING A SPINNER. THESE FISH WILL JUSTHAMMER THAT BAIT. I MEAN THERE’S GOING TO BENO DOUBT IN YOUR MINDWHEN YOU GET A FISH ON. AND BASICALLY FOR A LOTOF INLAND WATER ESPECIALLYI DON’T CARE IF YOU’RE IN IOWA,NEBRASKA, MINNESOTA,WISCONSIN, NORTH DAKOTA,SOUTH DAKOTAWHEREVER YOU’RE OUTIN THE UPPER MIDWEST,IF YOU JUST RUN JUSTA SMALL SPINNER JUST LIKE THIS,JUST A SMALL BLADEOR JUST A SINGLE HOOK. AND SCHEELS HAS ALL KINDSOF DIFFERENT SPINNERS AND BLADECOLORS AND BEAD OPTIONS. BUT IF YOU’RE JUST LOOKINGFOR A LOT OF ACTIONTHERE’S JUST A SIMPLE FORMULATHAT’S GOING TO CATCH YOUA LOT OF FISH. THERE IS A BIG LONG BARTHAT COMES OUT HERE. AND THERE’S A COUPLE OF SPOTSWHERE IT COMES UP HIGH LIKE12, 13, 14, 15 FEETWITH A LOT OF ROCK ON IT. WE’RE NOT CATCHING FISHON THE ROCK. WE’RE CATCHING FISH ON KINDOF THE SIDE OF IT,WHERE THERE’S JUST FLAT. IT FEELS LIKE A LITTLE BITSOFTER BOTTOM. ANYWHERE FROM SAY20 TO 16 FEET OF WATER. AND WE’RE JUST GOING BACKAND FORTH UP AND DOWN THIS BARAND THESE FISH ARE KINDOF SCATTERED ON IT. THERE’S A COUPLE OF ENDSWHERE THERE SEEMS TO BEMORE FISH. BUT WHAT’S NEAT ABOUT THIS ISWE’RE CATCHING WALLEYES WHICHWERE WHAT WE’RE FISHING FORBUT YOU KNOW WE’RE GETTINGA FEW INCIDENTAL PIKE,WE’RE GETTING SOME PERCHOR JUST A LOT OF ACTIVITYOUT HERE. AND SO THAT’S ALWAYSA GOOD OMEN,JUST SIGNS OF LIFE. >> THE FIRST EIGHT MILESOF OUR SYSTEM HEREIS QUITE SPREAD OUT AND LARGE. THERE’S A LOT OF ISLANDS,COVES, STUFF LIKE THAT. THE ADVANTAGE TO THAT ISWE DON’T GET THE BIG,BIG WINDS THAT SOMEOF THE LIKE LAKE WINNIPEG GETSOR DEVILS LAKE FOR EXAMPLEWHERE YOU GUYS CAN’T GET OUTIF IT GETS REALLY ROUGHUNLESS YOU’VE GOT BIG BOATS. HERE WE CAN ALWAYS GET OUTNO MATTER WHAT THE WEATHER. SO PASS THAT 8 MILE POINTWHICH IS THE FIRST SETOF RAPIDS THE RIVER GETS NARROWFOR PROBABLY ABOUT 10,12 MILES. THEN IT OPENS UP AGAIN WHEN YOUGET PAST THAT NARROW SPOTAND IT GETS MORE LIKE A LAKEAGAIN WITH A LOT OF ISLANDSAND REEFS AND COVES. IT’S PRETTY DIVERSE. >> WELL, I JUST LOVE HOWTHESE FISH JUST DON’T GIVE UP. WHOA. >> DO YOU NEED THE NET?>> YEAH I’M JUST GOINGTO TRY TO LIP HIM IN. QUITS. >> WHOA. >> FUN FISH. >> WE’RE APPROXIMATELYTHREE HOURS FROMTHE U. S. /CANADIAN BORDER. WE’RE VERY CLOSE TOTHE ONTARIO BORDER. WE’RE ON THE TOP NORTH ENDOF THE WHITESHELL PROVINCIALPARK. THE RIVER THAT OUR CAMP SITSON RIGHT HERE BORDERSTHE TWO PARKS, AN OPENINGPROVINCIAL PARK NORTH ANDTHE WHITESHELL TO THE SOUTH. >> BIG PIKE. >> LET ME REEL UP HEREAND HELP YOU. >> COMING IN FOR YOU. LOOK AT THAT. THERE WE GO. ALL RIGHT, NICE WORK, OH,THERE SHE CAME OFF IN THE NET. >> YEAH, PERFECT. >> HERE, YOU WANT TO GRAB ITFOR YOU?I COULD HAND IT TO YOU HERE. JUST A NICE FISH. WOW. >> NICE FISH. >> LOOK AT THERE. BEAUTIFUL. I’M GOING TO PUT RIGHT BACKIN THE WATER HERE. THERE SHE GOES. THAT LOOKED FUN. THIS IS JUST CLASSICCANADIAN FISHING. YOU KNOW IF SOMETHINGLOOKS FISHY, YOU KNOWYOU’RE GOING TO CATCH FISHWHERE YOU EXPECT TO CATCH THEM,IN THE SENSE THAT YOU GOAROUND SOME OF THESE BANKSFOR EXAMPLE IN CAST LURESINTO THE CABBAGE,YOU’RE GONNA CATCH BIG PIKE. IF YOU GO UP ALONG THE SHALLOWROCKS YOU’RE GOING TO FINDSMALLMOUTH BASS. IF YOU GO OUT ON THE REEFSIN THE DEEPER STRUCTURE THEYARE GOING TO BE COVEREDWITH WALLEYES. YOU KNOW IF SOMETHINGLOOKS FISHY, FISH IT. TELLS YOU WHAT WHEN YOU GETIN THIS COUNTRY,THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF PLACESTO FISH. >> OH THAT’S A NICE WALLEYE. >> OH, A WALLEYE. >> GET THE NET FOR YOU. NICE. HAMMERED IT PRETTY GOOD. >> YEAH, JUST HAMMERED IT. >> COOL. >> THERE WAS A PIKE RIGHT AWAY. >> THAT’S ALWAYS FUN. >> YOU SEE HOW MY FISHARE HEALTHY THOUGH,LIKE THESE WALLEYES HERE,THEY’RE ALL SOLID FISH HERE. YOU DON’T GET SKINNY ONES. >> THAT’S HOW YOU END THE DAYHERE UP IN THE NORTH COUNTRYHERE, IT’S IS JUST A GREAT WAYTO LIVE. AND THAT’S WHY SO MANY PEOPLELIKE TO COME OUTAND DO THIS TYPE OF STUFF. YOU JUST GET AWAYFROM EVERYTHING. DON’T SEE HARDLY ANY BOATSON THE WATER AND EAT FISH. >> YEAH, YOU BET. >> UNTIL YOU’RE SICK OF IT.
